Victoria Beckham has fans in a frenzy over her collection for Target. VB x Target drops in the US on April nine, and will be bachelor internationally through Beckham'south website – before information technology sells out.

It was inspired, said the designer, by the "playful character of my Victoria, Victoria Beckham line, and is influenced by all of the experiences I've shared equally a mother with my children."

Cue a copy of her acknowledged scalloped mini dress (originally cut from crepe de chine-trimmed wool crepe and costing nearly $1200), and an adorable matching kids' version. You lot can have them both for 70 bucks.

There are bomber jackets, gingham pants, shirts, camisoles, frocks and playsuits. The 200-piece collection covers clothes for women (including plus sizes), girls, toddlers and babies. And prices beginning at USD$6! Woo hoo! Bargain warning!

Or is it?

"I wanted to do a collection for a woman who doesn't want to pay then much," Beckham said at the Manhattan press preview on Wednesday. "Information technology was about celebrating my relationship with Harper."

From a altitude, VB looked properly posh in her blackness polyester shirt and slacks with a bold calla lily design, but I suspect information technology might've been wise not to approach her with a naked flame. Said pants toll USD $28.

Did you wait silk? This is affordable luxury. Masstige. A dusting of designer glitter at deal-basement prices. And this bunny outfit is ridiculously cute.

Looking at this film, I'm desperate to purchase it, and I don't even accept kids. Meanwhile I've got the ad playing in the background – model Sasha Pivarova striding though a gleaming white Parisian-looking fix, an infectious grin on her confront, and a Spice Girls soundtrack. It is sunny and inclusive, #girlpower in action, also starring Lineisy Montero and torso positive model Candice Huffine. Women of different shapes and colours! Mums! Heart-melting tots! It'southward pressing all the right buttons.

Trouble is, "affordable luxury" is an oxymoron – a sly, weasel-y phrase that doesn't mean what is suggests it does. It was designed by marketing managers to make us, as shoppers, feel similar nosotros're being included in the rarefied earth of designer manner from which we are so frequently locked out due to cost.

This dress, for example, from Victoria Beckham's master line costs $ii,250. Can't afford it? Me neither.

That'due south where improvidence lines like Victoria, Victoria Beckham come in. They slot into what the industry calls the "gimmicky" womenswear category, forth with brands like Maje, Sandro and The Kooples (all of which accept recently launched into the Australian market, opening flagship stores in Melbourne). Prices range from around $300 to $500 - nevertheless too expensive for many.

Enter the designer collab, whereby fashion's elite brands lend their names – ergo, their glamour and desirability – to mass market wearing apparel producers such as Target, H&One thousand and Topshop. Except of course they don't really lend them! No donating act, this. Karl Lagerfeld was reportedly paid $1million for his H&M collab in 2004 . No news yet on VB's paycheck.

Simply really, do you care? When you tin can choice upwardly a genuine Victoria Beckham garment from Target while you're ownership a new toilet brush? It must be genuine because it has the designer label within. Just don't await too closely at the fabric or the stitching.

Target'due south marketing section is planning some absurd in-store activations. According to Women'southward Vesture Daily, the women'due south and children's collections will be merchandised together ("mummy and me" dressing is an obvious winner).

Sales staff "volition vesture T-shirts and badges and we'll have signs to herald the launch," a Target spokesman told the newspaper. "Nosotros're taking the thought of the whimsical English tea garden theme and putting tea carts in stores."

It's all going to be far too warm and fuzzy and fabulous to worry if those staff T-shirts have been designed to throw away. Or fret about weather condition in the garment factories that fabricated them. Sod information technology, Spice Upward Your Life! And if these clothes autumn autonomously in a few weeks, no biggie. Like buses, there'll be some other designer collab forth in a minute. Of that yous may be sure.
